As we’ve previously mentioned on Facebook and Twitter, Family Abuse Services of Alamance County will hold their Fourth Annual Purple Ribbon Gala on Saturday. In honor of their hard work and commitment to this community, we’d like to tell you a little more about the work that they do.
Family Abuse Services emphasizes the prevention of violence through education and spreading awareness. Their services include a 24-hour crisis line, a shelter and transitional housing, court advocacy, and support groups.
They strive to uphold the following mission: “Family Abuse Services is committed to zero tolerance of domestic violence. The agency will provide services and support to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence in Alamance County. We are committed to the prevention and intervention of domestic violence and child abuse through community education and interdisciplinary cooperation between agencies working with high risk families.”
Domestic violence affects thousands of people around the world each day, and yet many still have a hard time talking about it. Organizations such as Family Abuse Services are committed to helping the victims of domestic violence and spreading awareness so that maybe—one day—this vicious cycle will end. Last year, Family Abuse Services received1,202 crisis and support calls on their hotline, housed 104 women and children in their shelter, and helped 980 clients through their court advocacy program. They strive to make a difference every day. What can you do to stop the silence?
Start by taking a few minutes to watch this TedTalk by Leslie Morgan Steiner on why domestic violence victims don’t leave. She has a powerful message to share.
