Though you may not have known, today marks the start of National Blueberry Month, which runs through the month of July. In honor of this occasion, we’d like to highlight one of our local businesses, Blueberry Thrill Farm, located just down the road in Gibsonville, NC.
Founded in 1982, the farm was started by Rick and Nan Langhorne. After looking at their budgets, tastes and what other local farmers were growing, they originally settled on three crops to be planted over several acres of land: Thornless Blackberries, Rabbiteye Blueberries and Asparagus. After a few years of some ups and quite a few downs, the Langhornes finally thought they had figured out what works best for them, which is growing fairly large quantities of superior quality perennial crops rather than growing dozens of different vegetables that have to be replanted every year.
Over time, the farm became hard to upkeep and eventually became dormant for several years. However, the farm recently reopened. They’ve removed all the old crops and have planted new ones, including blueberries, blackberries, apples and flowers, along with peaches and pears that are soon to come!
Want to pick some blueberries for yourself? The farm is now open to pickers for the summer season. Here are all the details you need to know:
Farm Location:
6938 Eaglesfield Road
Gibsonville, NC 27249
Hours: Open Saturdays and Wednesdays from 7 am – noon. Also open July 4 from 7 am – noon.
