As we’ve posted on our Facebook page, Elon professor, Terry Tomasek, has been named the new director of Elon Academy. Originally from Florida, Tomasek started out by teaching middle and high school science. Eventually, she moved to North Carolina and became an associate professor for the School of Education at Elon. Now, she is also a part of the Elon Academy, where she teaches high school students how to get into, and through, college. In June, she will begin her position as director of the program and will be in charge of running it.
The Elon Academy started after Cummings High School was put on Judge Howard Manning’s list of low-performing schools around the state. The program consists of four phases:
- College Access Program- Each year, about 25 9th graders are accepted into this high school program where they attend three residential summer sessions at the university, along with a monthly Saturday Academy.
- Transitions to College Program- Supports the program’s graduates’ transitions to college with a three day summer retreat, family workshop and celebration.
- College Success Program- Aims to ensure college completion for scholars by arranging visits from Elon professors and help in securing additional financial aid.
- Alumni Program- Provides a continuous network of support to graduates and their family upon their completion of college.
