Elonthon was started 11 years ago and is the largest philanthropy at Elon University. It was founded by a group of students hoping to help provide emotional and financial support to the patients and families of the Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center. Over the last decade, the event has grown and is now considered an Elon tradition. Each year, over a thousand students participate in order to do help some of the most deserving families.

“There are hundreds of Dance Marathons around the country, each benefiting their own Children's Miracle Network hospital. They differ in size, location, themes, length... the only things they share are the common goal, to help kids, and the rule that you must remain standing for the entirety of your time at the event! It's all a symbol of the hope and support we give to the child patients and their families”.
At the beginning of the year, students sign up for a six hour, twelve hour or full twenty-four hour shift; and, during the twenty-four hours of Elonthon, things are constantly happening. Families that have been helped by Elonthon’s efforts come to visit and speak with the students. Also, various organizations from campus volunteer to perform for the students and help keep morale up. This year, Elon’s Dance Team and Vital Signs A Capella were among the groups to help out.
After countless hours of hard work, Elon students raised $176,216.94 for the kids of Duke Children’s Hospital. “Elonthon's donations to Duke go towards special programs for Duke Children's Hospital patients; these programs give patients and their families events and resources to make their hospital stay comfortable and enjoyable”. It is amazing to see these students getting so excited about helping our community members. We are so proud of what they have done and wish them the best of luck in the years to come!
